A look into some of the best hacks and mods performed on the Wii remote control.

Since it’s global release in November 2006, the Wii has stirred up quite a fuss, the first arcade style games console of it’s kind and also the first console where you’re more likely to hit your screen than the high scores. The unique design of the Wii remote has made it eligible for all sorts of uses (apart from smashing your LCD or Plasma), we’ve found the best examples of Wii Controller hacks, modifications and alternatives for you!

This uber nerd piece of kit was built single handily by a dedicated Japanese gamer and it’s truly the mother of all Wii hacks and modifications.

Unlike most Wii remote modifications which merely mimic the appearance of items but not their actual use, this original Wii BB Gun has no moulded plastic and is purely a Wii BB Gun. The B button from the Wii controller is wired to the gun’s trigger which allows for realistic game play and an on screen blood fest!

3. The Wii Fire Fighting Robot

Not a big red fire engine with a never ending ladder and a powerful water cannon like you’d imagine but impressive none the less. This clever little robot uses infra red detectors to lock down the position of fire and then it manoeuvres itself towards the flames and then put them out using it’s fan. It won’t be stopping huge blazes but it’s certainly on course to a promotion!

4. Wii Car Acceleration Monitor

After being inspired by a physics lecture, this Wii modder thought, why not use the 3-axis accelerometers in a Wii remote to measure G-forces, acceleration and 0-60mph times? That’s exactly what he did! Now this Wii modder can record the acceleration and 0-60mph times of his car, even storing them in Excel for further analysis!

5. Wii Controlled Giant Grappling Arm

So you’ve nearly finished a huge project with robotic grappling arms, what there’s left to do I wonder? Of course, calibrate the powerful state of the art grapping arms to be controlled by a humble Wii remote. These adventurous software nerds had 30 tonnes of steel in control at the flick of their wrist packing 200 bars of hydraulic pressure!

If you’ve got a RC car at home with a perfectly made controller then don’t be an idiot and use that! Spends hours of time and money on resources to turn your Wii remote into a remote-controlled car controller instead! Using the motion sensors inside the Wii-mote you can turn, accelerate and reverse merely through titling and waving, not over complicated at all!

Anyone who plays tennis will know that a good toss of the ball is the difference between a good and bad serve. This intuitive device has crossed the line of casual gaming to real life practicality, the accelerometers inside the Wii remote helps the user discover their best serving patterns, through toss of the ball versus serve success. Be warned though, you may turn out more Robo-Cop than Roger Federer.

9. Wii Zapper Gun

Combining the retro NES Zapper with the modern Nintendo Wii remote, this quality mod has anything a gamer would want. The Wii’s infra red sensor has been taken out and put on the tip of the Zapper along with the trigger wires, which have been extracted from the Wii Remote and put into the NES  Zapper. This mash up of components is sure to give FPS game play a sensational new aspect.

By no means is it the Hubble telescope but impressive none the less, controlled at a tilt or a flick, moving the telescope to the best position is easy to do. Freely available software means programming and changing the rate of movement is very simple to do, with many different settings available for you to command!

12. Wii Synthesiser

This ingenious Wii modder has turned from player to conductor, the synthesiser being the instrument and his Wii remote being the baton. Not restricted to just playing simple notes as you can also manipulate the frequency and length of each note. Is it a coincidence that this Wii modder chose the Star Trek theme tune? Sadly, I think not.

13. Wii Interactive Whiteboard

Using merely more than £40 worth of technology and a little bit of ingenuity, this well rounded geek has turned a few simple components into an interactive white board at a fraction of the price, as purpose built white boards are usually in the region of £2000 to £3000. As he highlights in the video, it’s simplistic technology that could really help impoverished schools. Super geek indeed.

This clever app on the iPhone has made synchronisation between two major pieces of modern technology work together perfectly in sync. Thought the practical use is not clear, it is an outstanding piece of software that smoothly tracks the movements of the Wii remote in real time on the iPhone’s screen.

15. Wii Hemp Remote

This is a fully functioning Wii remote that is covered up to it’s little electrical eye balls in hemp, the greatest natural resource known to man, well according to hippies anyway. Hippy or not, if you’re bored of the dull, lifeless white plastic of a Wii controller, why not give it a rugged and “greener” feel. Why stop at Hemp though? Why not try raw meat or the skin off a sheep’s back?
